Phonemic Awareness
Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and mentally manipulate the individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words.
Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and mentally manipulate the individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words.
Foundation for Phonics: Students learn that words are made of small sounds (phonemes), which is an essential skill for learning letter-sound relationships (phonics).
Decoding & Encoding: Students learn to blend sounds to read words (decode) and break words into sounds to spell them (encode).
Predicts Reading Success: Strong phonemic awareness strongly predicts a child's future reading ability; poor skills often lead to reading difficulties.
Builds Fluency: As decoding improves, so does reading fluency, allowing focus on comprehension.
Supports Spelling: Students learn that sounds map to letters, which leads to more accurate spelling.
Choose 1 or 2 letter sounds.
Have your child draw little
images that connect to that
sound. You can also draw pictures & have your child guess the sound!
For example:
Letter T: turtle, tree, teeth
Say the name of 3 objects.
Have 2 of the objects begin with the same sound.
For example:
Listen to these words: boy, cat, box. Which one doesn’t belong?
Say a word very slowly, like a turtle, and have your child guess the word.
For example:
/sss/uuu/nnn
Student responds: sun
/fff/iii/shh/
Student responds: fish
Play the game Simon Says. When you are giving directions, segment target words into sounds and invite your child to guess the word by blending the sounds.
For example:
Simon says, touch your /f/ee/t/
ch/ee/k h/a/n/d l/i/p/s
h/ea/d l/e/g n/o/se
Use counters or fingers to represent sounds. Have your child drag a counter to represent each sound.
For example:
How many sounds are in the word, fish? Students should drag 3 counters or display 3 fingers - one for each sound.
/f/i/sh
Say a word and invite your
child to take a step forward or
hop for each sound in the word.
For example:
My word is bus… Child segments the word into sounds /b/u/s/
and hops forward 3 times
(for each sound in the word).
In a playful and entertaining manner, Sounder & Friends™ encourages children to explore and interact with the characters and the "soundscape", all the while developing phonemic awareness skills.
In this online game, students listen to segmented sounds in a word & blend them together to find a matching picture.
